Felíne took over our lives in May of 1999.

It all started when my lovely wife Sue told me about a shelter in East Orange, NJ that was closing within a few days.  As I started to wonder just what happens to animals in a shelter when it closes, she started to tell me:  all 60 of the cats and dogs housed in the shelter were scheduled to be KILLED!

The subject of adopting a pet had come up many times before, but our lease expressly forbid pets of any kind.  Under the circumstances, that didn't stop us.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon to find deplorable conditions, it looked as if they hadn't cleaned the place in ages.  The smell was so bad, we couldn't stay inside for more than 30 seconds at a time.  So we asked a young lady who worked at the shelter to pick out a cat for us and to try to pick one she thought had the least chance of being picked by someone else.  Our reasoning was simple:  There were plenty left behind and we didn't want to reduce anyone else's chances of being adopted, since most people choose a pet entirely based on it's appearance.

The moment I saw her face I knew we had made the right decision.  We called our landlord to try to get permission but we couldn't reach him.  So we took her anyway hoping that if our landlord said no, we could still find a home for her elsewhere.  He got back to us the next day and said yes, thank God.

Felíne has enriched our lives in more ways than we can count.
